Light the World with Your Beauty

"Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart." Kahlil Gibran
The other evening I attended a meeting dedicated to bringing out the best in each of us in a safe environment. Few of us knew one another yet the facilitator was able to stimulate a compassionate, honest and open dialog. The first exercise was to identify our top five highest values, then our top three and finally the top value that guided our life. From there we opened up to say how we really wanted to show that value in our lives. My response included a comment that I did not want to have to leave my home (my workplace) every day and go through the whole hassle of making myself look beautiful in order to have the impact to inspire and empower others. To that comment a women I met for the first time that evening replied with great conviction but you ARE beautiful! I responded appropriately by merely thanking her and with great self discipline I held back the urge to say it is not physical beauty you see but the light coming from my highest value which is LOVE.
We hear it all the time that true beauty comes from within……so how do we get it and how do we let it out? Acceptance is the place to start. Keep a gratitude journal and instead of filling it with gratitude for things in your life fill it with gratitude for your own skills, contributions and decisions through day whether large or small. Begin to see yourself with loving eyes. Quiet the demons in your head that may want you to think this is too egotistical or that you are not good enough. Realize that as you lift yourself up you lift others around you. To paraphrase a well known quote: “Who are you to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.” So step it up and let the beauty in your heart be seen.
